February and early March is the right time to cut back perennials, ornamental grasses and vines that have been left for winter interest. It is also the time to spray dormant oils to smother insect eggs and scale on woody plants. In addition, it’s perfect to prune trees and shrubs while it’s easy to see the branching structure.
Southern Exposure Landscape Tip: If you have many ornamental grasses to cut back use duct tape or string and wrap the grass approximately 10 inches above the grade. Cut below the tape line with a gas or electric hedger. Now you have a nice bundle for easy clean-up and disposal.
